Evan: Jets firing Robert Saleh 'another reminder this franchise is a dysfunctional mess'

“The New York Jets are not, and should not, fire Robert Saleh in the middle of a season. It’s stupid, it doesn’t serve any purpose, it’s not gonna work, and it’s not gonna make sense.”

Call Old Takes Exposed, because the above statement uttered by Evan Roberts just last Thursday has, unfortunately, become a throwback to a time when the Jets HADN’T done exactly that.

So, Ev, how are you holding up hours after Gang Green dropped the bomb that they had cut the gas and gone all breaks on the Robert Saleh era by firing him Tuesday morning, five weeks into the season?

“There will come a point, probably at some point today, that I have no other choice but to embrace the future for the New York Jets and the hope of this season turning around – but when I said that on Thursday, I meant it,” Evan said to open Tuesday’s show.

But, he wasn’t sad, or angry, or whatever when he got the news. He was, instead…resigned to it?

“My first reaction wasn’t the same one a lot of Jets fans had, which is ‘good, he sucks, great, let’s turn the season around!’” Evan said. “My reaction was that this was just another reminder that the franchise I happen to root for, that Joe Benigno roots for, that maybe 40 percent of those of you listening root for, is a dysfunctional mess that has no idea what they’re doing. And don’t take that as a defense of Robert Saleh, because I have my issues with him, but what I said on Thursday is how I feel at 2 pm on Tuesday.”

Indeed, Evan, right now, is just stunned, because all this did was show the Jets are desperate, and you can insert LOLJETS or Same Old Jets or any other cliché here.

“Firing this coach in the middle of a season for an interim and trying to have success, which has NEVER HAPPENED in the history of football, is a desperate move,” Evan said. “And the other thing that scares me is that, according to Peter Schrager, who I trust, Joe Douglas wasn’t even in the room! So for whatever reason, the owner of this team decided on his own that he was firing the head coach. So for every Jets fan who thinks it’s a good thing, maybe it will be, and I hope it will be, but in this moment, it is another sign that this organization is a clueless mess.”

And Tiki, Giant to the core, thinks Evan is right.

“When you’re a game away, and that game could be on Monday night, from being in first place in your division five weeks into a season, everything you’re saying makes no sense,” Tiki said of the move. “Meaning, I’m going to fire the coach right now, because it doesn’t make sense. It makes you scratch your head and wonder why this happened three hours ago, but Joe Douglas hasn’t spoken yet and isn’t scheduled to speak, and only Woody Johnson is going to speak – and hopefully be analyzed on why he made this decision, because it feels rash and rushed, and that it was something that wasn’t football related.
But to me, this doesn’t make sense at this juncture of the season.”
