As the Jets finish out the season with Jeff Ulbrich has their interim head coach, Gio wonders if Gang Green to a disgraced, but proven, head coach to succeed Robert Saleh.
“I’m pitching this right now,” Gio said. “I don’t know if anyone else had said this, but I feel like I’m on the cusp of something special here. We talked about how the Jets are gonna have a new coach, and Woody Johnson had put himself in a position where he is not gonna get a top candidate...you’ve got Bill Belichick trashing Woody Johnson on a weekly basis...so, what coach can you get?
“The guy you get is Jon Gruden. He would take the job, he wouldn’t care about the Woody Johnson stuff, and he’d have a chip on his shoulder like you wouldn’t believe. The guy is a Super Bowl winning head coach. That’s the guy you gotta get.”
Gruden was forced to resign from his position as Raiders head coach back in 2021, when emails surfaced from Gruden containing language that was deemed misogynistic and homophobic. The emails had been years old, and Gruden has been trying to fight in court and prove that the league leaked them to force him out of his job. Gio acknowledges that some of the content in the emails are “indefensible,” and Boomer says he would have to take another look at them to determine whether he believes Gruden deserves another chance, though he doesn’t doubt that Gruden would have the ability to turn the Jets around.
“The Raiders had it going right with Jon Gruden, and someone decided to torpedo him,” Boomer said. “He was the attitude of the team, and Derek Carr could survive under that heavy-handed coaching that Jon Gruden brought.
“I’d have to look back at those emails and really dive into them and figure out what the hell is going on here.”
