Gio: Good luck to Woody Johnson, Jets in finding capable GM who would want in on this mess

After reading the bombshell report by The Athletic, which detailed the extent of Woody Johnson’s meddling with personnel decisions surrounding the Jets, Gio doesn’t see how the team will be able to get any capable football minds into the building to turn this organization around.

“Good luck finding a general manager that has any self respect coming in here to try to run this team,” Gio said.

“Woody Johnson took so much control of this organization and was taking the power away from his general manager way before this season started going south. That’s the issue.”

Johnson reportedly stepped in on several key personnel decisions since the blockbuster acquisition of Aaron Rodgers, including pushing for the acquisitions of Tyron Smith and Mike Williams while shutting down the retainment of Bryce Huff, all moves where the opposite could have arguably worked out better for the team.

“Nothing during Woody Johnson’s tenure outside of the Rex Ryan’s couple years has gone well,” Gio said. “And he hired these guys and didn’t let them do their job. He came in and started meddling.”

Regardless of how dysfunctional things appear with Johnson at the helm, Boomer believes a capable GM would still take the job, and as for the GM that just departed, it’s probably for the better given how Johnson was operating in the weeks and months before Douglas was fired.

“It is one of 32 jobs, and someone will want it,” Gio said. “Hopefully someone who has some experience with this...you gotta get someone in here who is gonna win the lottery one of these years.

“It’s better off for him and the Jets. There’s nothing worse than walking around on eggshells knowing that eventually you’re going to be removed.”
