Gio: Moving on from Aaron Rodgers was right move for Jets to change team culture

The Jets have reportedly told Aaron Rodgers that they will be moving forward without him in the fold, ending his New York tenure after two failed seasons in which New York finished below .500 both times.

It was a stunning bit of Super Bowl pregame news on Sunday, but for Gio, it was the right decision and a potential sign that Gang Green has brought in the right people to lead the franchise to a brighter future, especially with a major distraction now out of the building.

“With a new regime and the problems the Jets have had about who is in charge, who is the alpha male, it makes Aaron Glenn’s job that much harder if Aaron Rodgers is in that building,” Gio said. “Just because he had a few good games at the end of the season, he has been hurt 90 percent of the time he has been here...he looked horrible for the majority of the season, and even in that Bills game towards the end of the season.”

Rodgers is arguably better than many of the team’s alternatives at quarterback in 2025, but Gio says the next Jets season is also about revamping the culture, and doing that is a lot easier of a task if Rodgers is not around.

“If next year your goal was to go 8-9 or 9-8, maybe have a shot to make the playoffs, then you keep Aaron Rodgers around,” Gio said. “That's not the goal.

“The goal is to change the culture, change that building, and have a real leader in Aaron Glenn do it, and it makes it harder when Aaron Rodgers is in the building.”
