Gio: Why can't Zach Wilson just be like Jared Goff?

Jared Goff and the Lions are off to a sparkling 3-1 start after smacking the rival Packers in primetime on Thursday night, as Goff continues to perform in the win column despite not having the talent of many quarterbacks in the NFL.

Goff, who has been to a Super Bowl and holds a 57-46-1 career record, and only one losing season when he played a full year, has only six touchdown passes against three interceptions this season. Still, Detroit finds itself atop the NFC North, leaving Gio to wish for Zach Wilson to be able to at least be average for the Jets, who could likely win some games if Wilson wasn’t terrible.

“Can he be Jared Goff somehow? Can he just do that?” Gio said. “Jared Goff isn’t spectacular. Yes, he’s won a bunch of games and went to a Super Bowl with McVay, but can he just do that? can he rely on the running game and the other parts of the team that are good, and just make the throws and not be spectacular? Is it possible that he can just be that?

“If you look at the Lions, you know Jared Goff is not a great quarterback. You know he’s good, he’s above average, but if you match up with him in a Super Bowl, you’re not worried about him going out and winning a Super Bowl MVP…but he gets the job done. He wins games.”

Wilson has been, statistically, arguably the worst quarterback in football over the last two seasons, and he hasn’t looked any better through two starts this year. Gio just wants to see competent quarterback play from Wilson, as Goff is a blueprint that proves a team can win with a strong roster around an otherwise mediocre quarterback.

“If the Lions can be 3-1 with the way Jared Goff plays, then the Jets can be the same, or better,” Gio said. “If they can’t, that means we’re overrating the rest of the team.

“Nobody is asking him to be Patrick Mahomes. Be a C+. Just don’t be a stone F every time you go out there. Be a C+, maybe you’ll win some games.”
