The Jets have reportedly bolstered their secondary after being starved for interceptions last season.
According to multiple reports, Gang Green has acquired Minkah Fitzpatrick from the rival Dolphins for a seventh-round pick (via the Chargers). The acquisition gives the Jets a proven safety after a miserable defensive season in which the team failed to log a single interception.
According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, the deal will also include the Jets signing Fitzpatrick to a three-year, $40 million deal.
A former first-round pick, Fitzpatrick will be coming home in a sense. The Old Bridge, New Jersey native attended St. Peter’s Prep before attending college at Alabama. He blossomed into a five-time Pro Bowler with the Steelers before being dealt to Miami prior to last season. Fitzpatrick played 14 games with the Dolphins and logged one interception and one forced fumble.
Fitzpatrick led the league with six picks in 2022, but has only intercepted two passes since. Still, at just 29 years old, he should have plenty left in the tank for a Jets defense desperate for takeaways.
