The Jets have reportedly locked up their star wide receiver in the form of a historic contract extension.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Garrett Wilson has signed a four-year, $130 million deal after his future with the franchise was at least somewhat in question entering his fourth NFL season.
The 24-year-old will get $90 million in guaranteed money, and per Schefter, he becomes the first wide receiver ever to average $31 million per year after playing just three NFL seasons.
The big payday after only three years is justified given the production Wilson has put up since being drafted 10th overall. Wilson has logged at least 1,000 receiving yards every year so far, and has appeared in every game since being drafted.
The Ohio State product is coming off a season in which he set career highs in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns.
Wilson put up those numbers despite mainly working with a bust at quarterback in Zach Wilson and an aging and compromised Aaron Rodgers. Now, he will look to find a new level with Justin Fields under center, and with a new regime in place.
Now, the Jets and first-year GM Darren Mougey can change focus to Sauce Gardner, who is also eligible for an extension after being drafted six picks ahead of Wilson in 2022.
