Jets co-owner and chairman Woody Johnson took to Twitter on Thursday afternoon to pay tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away earlier in the day at age 96.

Johnson spent significant time with the Royal Family from 2017-21, when he was the U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom during Donald Trump’s Presidency, a tenure during which he oversaw the relocation of the U.S.
Embassy in London and advocated for stronger trade relations between the U.S. and the U.K. after “Brexit,” Great Britain’s departure from the European Union.

Also, Johnson made an unsuccessful bid to purchase the Chelsea Football Club earlier this year, not making the previous ownership’s short list of prospective buyers despite an offer rumored to be worth $2.6 million U.S. dollars (two million pounds).

Queen Elizabeth II, who ascended to the throne in 1952 following the death of her father, King George VI, passed away Thursday at Balmoral Castle, one of the Royal Family’s residences in Scotland. Her passing was officially announced on Twitter at 6:30 p.m. BST, hours after a report circulated that doctors had placed her under medical supervision due to rapidly deteriorating health.

The Queen will be succeeded by her son, Prince Charles, who becomes King Charles III after a tenure where he was both the oldest and longest-serving heir apparent in British history.
