Zach Wilson brushed off Jets legend Joe Namath’s comments when asked about them on Thursday, giving his respect to the lone franchise Super Bowl champ despite Namath insisting the Jets find a new quarterback.

“He’s passionate,” Wilson said. “He’s obviously one of the greats. As an offense, we gotta do everything we can to try and prove him wrong.

“Obviously, Joe was an unbelievable player, but this locker room is very tight knit, and we’re working to get better. I’m working to get better. I know I need to improve, I promise I'm doing everything I can to keep trying to get better.”

Namath is one of the more prominent voices to express a desire to bench Wilson, but many fans share the same sentiment. Still, Wilson insists it is “easy” to block out the outside noise.

“It's been tough, obviously, these three years,” Wilson said. “I'm in a good spot mentally, I'm confident in my abilities and confident in this team…we’re gonna handle our business.”

Now, Wilson prepares for a critical game against the mighty Chiefs, and next to nothing from his first two starts of the season have given his critics reason to believe they are in the wrong. But Wilson will keep his focus on what is said within the team.

“The focus is just to rely on each other in this locker room,” Wilson said. “We’re gonna do everything we can to improve.”
