Joe Benigno: Sauce Gardner already 'way ahead' of Darrelle Revis' rookie season

Darrelle Revis told Rich Cimini of ESPN earlier this week that rookie cornerback Sauce Gardner has what it takes to be the next premier pass defender in Jets history, representing a passing of the torch to Gardner from the likely greatest pass defender in Gang Green history.

But Joe Benigno says Gardner is already ahead of Revis’ trajectory.

“As good as Darrelle Revis was, and Darrelle Revis is more than likely going into the Hall of Fame this year. He wasn’t this good at this point in his career as Sauce is,” Joe said. “Sauce is way ahead of where Darrelle Revis was at this stage of his career.”

Gardner has already won multiple Rookie of the Week awards, and is statistically among the best cornerbacks in the league in his first NFL season. He already has two interceptions, one off of Revis’ rookie mark, which Revis did in 16 games.

“How many defensive players are this good this quick?” Evan said. “It just doesn’t happen.”
