Joe Benigno: Would Baker Mayfield be the right move at QB for the Jets?

Zach Wilson still needs to learn, Mike White is a free agent, Joe Flacco is “done” according to Joe Benigno and Brandon Tierney…so where do the Jets turn at quarterback next season?

Derek Carr and Jimmy Garoppolo will be the hot names on the trade market for the Jets, but Joe B. has an outside the box idea for 2023.

“They have to get a veteran guy, and I don’t really love Derek Carr – I like Jimmy G a lot better – but what about Baker Mayfield?” Joe asked on his first Football Monday appearance on Tiki & Tierney in 2023. “He’s a humbled guy now, and he’s 27 but will be on his fourth team next year.”

One thing is clear to Joe: Zach Wilson can be the backup, or he can win the job, but he can’t be handed it again – and Tiki agreed.

“He’s fighting lack of success, but he’s also fighting fan ire now, so he’ll have to go the extra mile like he never has before,” Tiki said. “He has to come in and be great, but I don’t know if he’ll be great quick enough.”

No matter who the QB ends up though, the head coach and/or offensive coordinator need to be people who can help Zach Wilson and anyone else grow, because that’s a combination the Jets haven’t had in a long, long time.

“I go back to Sanchez, Geno, Sam Darnold, now Wilson – I never thought any of these guys were coached right,” Joe said. “You need to get the right guy in here than can connect with the QB…this kid Wilson has talent, but you’re talking about a guy who has been humbled big time now.”
