Joe Douglas spoke with reporters at the NFL Combine on Tuesday, and raved about the Jets’ meeting with Derek Carr, who many see as a top target to be Gang Green’s starting quarterback next season.
“That was a fantastic visit, really enjoyed spending time with him,” Douglas said about the meeting that took place in New Jersey. “He’s the only quarterback I can shed any light on for you guys, since he’s the only quarterback that’s a free agent. I can say that He left a strong impression with everybody.”
The Jets and Carr will be meeting again this week in Indianapolis, while the NFL world still waits for updates on Aaron Rodgers’ future. If the Jets were to acquire Rodgers, they would have to give up assets to do so, which wouldn’t be the case for Carr, a free agent. Douglas says that will be a factor when deciding which route to take for the quarterback position.
“As we look through every scenario, those are things we’re weighing, acquiring a player with no compensation in terms of trading draft picks or players versus someone who might require that,” Douglas said. “We’re looking at every option, and that will play a part in the decision.”
But as Douglas and the team has reiterated several times since the end of the season, the main mission of the offseason will be to add a veteran quarterback, and all options are still on the table.
“We’re gonna be exploring the veteran quarterback market this offseason,” Douglas said. “We’re gonna look at every available option. When it’s time to make the right decision, when everyone goes through their process, we’re gonna make the best decision for the Jets.”
