All eyes on who the Jets will add at the quarterback position this offseason, but another big question will be about retaining, specifically Quinnen Williams.
The All-Pro defensive lineman is entering the final year of his rookie deal, and told reporters after the season that he would not participate in voluntary offseason workouts unless he has a contract extension, which figures to be a big payday given his production.
On the extension front, Joe Douglas told reporters on Tuesday that things are trending in a favorable direction on that front.
“We’ve had several good discussions [with his agent] and Quinnen since the season, and we feel really good about where we’re at,” Douglas said. “We feel good that this process is gonna play out in the right way.”
Elsewhere around the team, Douglas did not comment on whether the Jets would pick up the fifth-year option on the oft-injured Mekhi Becton, though he praised where he is at physically heading into the spring.
As for Zach Wilson, the sentiment remained the same as it was after the season: the team will add a veteran quarterback this offseason to lead the offense, but that doesn’t mean they have given up on their former No. 2 overall pick.
"Our stance on Zach hasn’t changed. Obviously the first two years haven’t played out the way anybody hoped, but we still feel like there is a very high ceiling with Zach,” Douglas said. “We still feel strongly that Zach is going to be able to hit his ceiling.”
