The Jets and Aaron Glenn have begun putting together their coaching staff, as news broke on Wednesday night that Steve Wilks has been named the team’s defensive coordinator.
Wilks last coached in Super Bowl LVIII when his Niners lost to the Chiefs last year, and did not get an NFL job after being a part of a coaching staff that came one win shy of a championship. In addition to his years of DC experience, Wilks has also served as a head coach, though it did not go well with the Cardinals, where his team finished with a 3-13 record, and he served as the interim head coach for the Panthers in 2022.
Some fans reacted to the news with criticism, but Keith McPherson is really encouraged by the leadership group that is coming together in Florham Park.
“I’m liking the look of this,” Keith said. “There’s a lot of negativity around his history and experience, but he has a ton of experience. You can cherry pick the bad...but this guy has been coaching for years. You got adults, man. You got guys that they have to respect.
“I’m talking about these players. They’re not gonna get over on these guys. These are grown-ass men...they’ve seen it all. This is nothing new here.”
Wilks comes in with 16 years of experience as a coach in the NFL, and Keith says that is valuable, even if that experience hasn’t always come with success. With his experience and Glenn’s ability to get players to buy in, Keith believes the recipe is there to turn Gang Green into a winner.
“I do think they can change the Jets,” Keith said. “I think they can work with this talent and they can turn this thing around quick because of the experience that they have.”
