Mekhi Becton gave Newsday a fairly scathing assessment of how he was handled by the Jets coaching staff last summer, essentially blaming them for his injury due to being moved to right tackle.
Becton told Newsday that the position change led him to put more weight on his right knee, and despite discomfort and even limping during practice, coaches urged him to push through until he ultimately needed reconstructive surgery and missed the season.
For Boomer and Gio, it’s another disappointing chapter in a Jets tenure that includes a promising rookie season, multiple knee injuries, weight concerns, and social media venting about his role.
“He’s not saying it’s because he’s out of shape, he’s blaming the coaches saying they moved him to right tackle, and that’s why he got hurt,” Gio said. “The fact that he looks back at that injury and doesn’t take responsibility for it…doesn’t he understand how that sounds?”
Boomer, who has openly criticized Becton’s attitude and previous nutritional habits, before he cut significant weight this offseason, couldn’t be too surprised.
“Imagine how frustrating it must be coaching a guy like this,” Boomer said. “Who has a much better view of himself than the coaches have of him.
“They had just about had it with him going into that training camp before he got hurt…now they don’t pick up his fifth-year option and he’s getting all perturbed, but he has to look at himself.”
