Rex Ryan: Jets' defense on Sunday's final play 'the dumbest call ever'

Okay, one last one piling on Gregg Williams before we put it to bed, just like the Jets did to his tenure as defensive coordinator (too soon?) on Monday.

This one was pre-firing but definitely worth the squeeze, because it comes from a guy who knows what it’s like to be fired by the Jets: our old pal Rex Ryan, who had this synopsis of the final defensive play of Sunday’s Jets loss to the Raiders:

“That's the dumbest call ever. There's no other way of putting it.”

Rexy doubled down on that one later on during ESPN’s ‘Get Up’ show, not long after Boomer Esiason had mentioned on Boomer & Gio that he would’ve fired Williams before Sunday ended.

“Dumbest call I've ever seen…it's just stupid. It's just absolutely stupid,” Ryan said.

And here comes the triple-down.

"Not only was it the stupidest call ever, they don't even know how to run the dang Cover-0 blitz," Ryan said. "And you wonder why they give up 400 yards a game. You wonder why this team hasn't won a game."

At least he feels bad for the Jets…and no, none of them are his former charges, because there’s barely anyone left from the Todd Bowles era, let alone his.

“The thing I feel bad about is for every one of those kids that have been a laughing stock of the league,” Ryan said. “The Jets have been a laughing stock of this league. And for you to put those kids in that situation, to take the moment away from them – take away a win – after all their hard work, that's just ridiculous."
