The Jets named Tanner Engstrand as their new offensive coordinator over the weekend, bringing over a familiar face for new head coach Aaron Glenn, who was part of Dan Campbell’s coaching staff alongside Engstrand with the Lions.
The 42-year-old Engstrand has been Detroit’s passing game coordinator for the past two seasons, but has no experience as an offensive coordinator, which is a big concern for Sal Licata.
“They keep doing the same thing,” Sal said. “Where it’s the new offensive coordinator with the rookie head coach and the rookie GM.
“You look at what the Raiders are doing in contrast, that is how I wanted the Jets to be set up. If Rodgers comes in here, it’s going to be a similar story...the structure is still the same. I’m not getting fooled again by the Jets. I think it’s easy to get fooled by it because people want to love Aaron Glenn. I’m not getting sucked into it.”
Sal is worried that the Jets are one domino away from falling into the exact same turmoil that has plagued them for years, as a decision to move on from Aaron Rodgers, or a decision from Rodgers himself to retire, would put a big question mark over the quarterback position and only enhance the painfully familiar feeling around Florham Park, where Sal believes the coaching staff is way too similar to other failed regimes in terms of prior experience.
“It’s a recipe for disaster. Inexperience all over the place,” Sal said.
“When I see the way the Raiders are doing things, Pete Carroll and Chip Kelly...that, to me, is a stabilizing force that can build a foundation for the Raiders moving forward. For the Jets, it’s the same old stuff.”
