Mike White: Zach Wilson meltdown was 'one bad interview taken out of context'

Mike White may or may not be back in New York next year, as he is a free agent whose window will open up when the new league year begins in less than two weeks.

The Jets’ quarterback situation has been heavily rumored to be “bring in a veteran and let Zach Wilson sit and learn,” with no mention of White – although, in the NFL, anything can happen.

When it comes to Wilson, though, White had nothing but praise when he was asked during an appearance on The Joe Rose Show on sister station WQAM in Miami Friday.

“He is a good kid,” White said of Wilson. “It was one bad interview taken out of context after a rough game, and that happens. I’m not condoning it, but it happens, and I think I think it all spiraled out of control from there.”

White also said that despite what the outside perception might have been, the Jets' QB room never had any awkward moments.

"It is a really close knit locker room and quarterback room as well, we all supported each other and it was a healthy environment," White said. "There weren’t any awkward moments at all where there could’ve been, everyone was super professional. From the outside looking in you might not think so, but we didn’t skip a beat no matter who was playing."

Wilson hasn’t been the bastion of success with the Jets – 8-14 record, 55.2 completion percentage, 15-18 TD-INT ratio in two seasons – but White is confident that the former No. 2 overall pick is on the right track to getting it together.

“All he wants to do is perform and play well and win,” White said of Wilson. “He’s a good kid and I’m confident he’ll bounce back. Whatever happens next, wherever it happens, he’ll use this as motivation and learn from it and get better.”
