The Cardinals have made it official, that they have traded veteran quarterback Joshua Dobbs to the Vikings, as Minnesota finds the quarterback help they need after losing Kirk Cousins for the season to an Achilles injury.
The trade “annoyed” Evan, as he would have liked for the Jets to swing that deal, but maybe not for the reason you think.
“This is not about replacing Zach Wilson,” Evan said. “If this was three weeks ago, I would have told you to go get a quarterback to replace Zach Wilson…I was willing to give Zach a week or two, and then probably pivoted. The Jets didn’t follow any of my ideas.
“Zach has shown promise over the last five weeks. I have to admit that. Zach Wilson has shown promise. Even the game on Sunday against the Giants…I said to you yesterday, I give him a lot of credit for three huge throws he made at the end of that game.”
Evan was all about swinging a trade for Cousins, or another reliable veteran, after Aaron Rodgers went down in Week 1, but the Jets are clearly set on getting as many looks at Wilson as possible. Evan accepts that mindset, but the Giants proved on Sunday that it’s important to have a somewhat trustworthy backup plan.
“When I say the Jets need to trade for a quarterback, I’m not saying it to replace Zach Wilson. I’m saying it to protect Zach Wilson,” Evan said. “We saw it in Sunday’s game. What happened to the Giants when Tyrod Taylor went down?
“That’s why the Jets…need to add a quarterback.”
