Evan: Zach Wilson backing up Aaron Rodgers is a 'stupid' plan by Jets

Zach Wilson is the Jets’ backup quarterback heading into the 2023 season, one that will carry higher expectations than any season for the franchise in recent memory.

Given how badly Wilson performed as the starter last season, and with the seeming lack of universal support for the former No. 2 overall pick in his own locker room, Evan says it’s “stupid” that Wilson is the next in line behind Aaron Rodgers.

“It’s why he shouldn’t be [the backup],” Evan told Sonny, a caller supporting Wilson as the backup. “It’s why he should not be the backup quarterback to Aaron Rodgers. It’s stupid.”

The Jets have a future Hall of Famer as the starter in Rodgers, who the Jets hope can groom Wilson into the eventual starter and franchise cornerstone they hoped he would be when they drafted him, but Evan is worried that Rodgers’ age and recent calf injury means that there is a chance Wilson will be asked to start at times this season, which could derail their hopes of contending.

“He’s a 40-year-old quarterback and he may miss time,” Evan said of Rodgers. “You talked about the lack of confidence Zach had last year and his teammates wear T-shirts of the backup. You’re right. Yet you’re okay, in a championship season, having that guy be your backup? I’m not.”
