The Jazz Chisholm/Maikel Garcia feud saw another chapter written on Tuesday night in Kansas City.
The two had words for each other after Chisholm stole third base in the sixth inning of the Yankees’ blowout win over the Royals, when Chisholm slid headfirst into third as Garcia tried to field the throw and apply the tag in one motion. The tag attempt landed on top of Chisholm’s head, knocking his helmet off as he slid safely into the bag.
Chisholm clearly didn’t like the tag, as camera angles seemed to catch the Yankee infielder telling the third base umpire that if Garcia planted a tag like that on him again, he would “smack the f--- out of him.”
Chisholm was eventually removed from the game with neck tightness, and after the game, he made it clear that he didn’t like the tag from Garcia.
“I just feel like every time we have a problem, it’s always been him,” Chisholm said, via MLB.com. “That’s the only reason I was so frustrated. And then to even see that he didn’t even have the ball for the way that he tagged me, it was just, I didn’t like it.”
A hard slide from Garcia sparked a feud last October, when he slid hard into second base in game four of the ALDS, colliding with Anthony Volpe. Chisholm came over from third base to defend his teammate, and the benches eventually cleared.
The Yanks won the game and the series, but Chisholm made it clear afterward that he didn’t care for his slide into Volpe. The sentiment remained the same after Garcia’s tag on Tuesday.
