The Yankee discourse has ramped up again in the wake of Luis Gil’s injury, a high-grade lat strain that will shut him down for the next six weeks.
Much of the fanbase has responded to the litany of spring injuries by crushing how the Yanks have been built, and Chris McMonigle has had enough of the criticism surrounding the Bombers overall, especially after winning a pennant last year and reaching the playoffs every year but once since Aaron Judge’s first season.
“We’ve gotten so negative about this team...it’s absolutely absurd. I will never understand it,” C-Mac said.
“I’m frustrated. But deep-seeded hatred? There’s so much of it, and it’s crazy. it drives me absolutely bonkers. We hate the manager, the owner, the general manager, half the players, we hate all of it...yet they are as mess-proof of an organization as any in professional sports. They never give you a completely crap season. It never happens.”
Given how many other New York teams have fared this millennium, C-Mac can’t believe there is so much frustration from the fanbase when it comes to the Yankees, who have been as much of a sure thing to be in the championship conversation on an annual basis as any other team in pro sports.
“I know it’s different sports, but think of the other teams that operate in this city...the idea that the Jets and Giants have been this bad for this long...think about how bad the Knicks were for two decades,” C-Mac said. “The Nets had the most talented team we’ve seen since Kobe and Shaq, and it blew up in their face...right back to irrelevance. The Rangers haven’t won a Cup since 1994, the Islanders since a decade before that, and the Devils haven’t won since the early 2000s.
“Think about where we are, and we’re gonna hate the Yankees and how they operate? It’s crazy!”
