The New York Yankees today announced that they have acquired minor league right-handed pitcher Wilmy Sanchez from the Houston Astros in exchange for INF Braden Shewmake.
Sanchez, 22, has allowed just 1R/ER in 7.0IP over five relief appearances with Double-A Corpus Christi this season (3H, 4BB, 8K, 0HR). In 2025, the right-handed pitcher went 2-4 with seven saves and a 6.05 ERA (61.0IP, 59H, 49R/41ER, 51BB, 75K, 6HR) in 46 relief outings with Corpus Christi. He ranked among Astros farmhands in saves (tied for second) and appearances (tied for third).
Over parts of five minor league seasons in the Astros organization (2022-26), Sanchez has gone 8-6 with 10 saves and a 3.80 ERA (189.1IP, 162H, 97R/80ER, 124BB, 248K, 10HR) in 105 games (six starts). The Santiago, D.R., native was originally signed by Houston as a non-drafted free agent on May 20, 2022.
Shewmake, 28, has batted .250/.314/.313 (8-for-32) with 5R, 2 doubles, 1RBI, 1BB and 1SB in 10 games with Triple-A Scranton/Wilke-Barre this season. The left-handed batter has hit .118 (8-for-68) with 4R, 2 doubles, 1HR, 4RBI, 1BB and 5SB in 31 career Major League games with the Atlanta Braves (2023) and Chicago White Sox (2024). Over parts of seven minor league seasons in the Atlanta Braves (2019-23), Chicago White Sox (2024) and Yankees (2025-26) organizations, Shewmake has hit .247/.308/.394 (412-for-1,667) with 248R, 90 doubles, 14 triples, 42HR, 206RBI, 135BB and 69SB in 451 career games. The Wylie, Tex., native was originally selected by Atlanta in the first round (21st overall) in the 2019 First-Year Player Draft out of Texas A&M University. Shewmake was acquired by Chicago-AL from Atlanta along with RHP Michael Soroka, RHP Riley Gowens, LHP Jared Shuster and INF Nicky Lopez in exchange for LHP Aaron Bummer on November 16, 2023. He was designated for assignment by the White Sox on January 1, 2025. Shewmake was claimed off waivers by the Kansas City Royals on January 8, 2025 and was designated for assignment on February 2, 2025. He was then claimed off waivers by the Yankees on February 5, 2025.
