Anthony Volpe is back in the bigs.

According to multiple reports, including Jack Curry of the YES Network, Volpe is being promoted from Triple-A with the expectation that Jose Caballero will be placed on the IL with the finger injury that sent him back to New York to undergo an MRI after Monday night's loss to the Orioles. Caballero appeared to injure his finger diving back to first base in a loss to the Brewers on Sunday. He appeared in Monday's game as a pinch runner and was thrown out trying to steal second base in the last out of the game.

Volpe was sent down to the minors after the clock on his rehab assignment ran out earlier this month, as Caballero had been playing well and earning the starting job. Volpe, who had been recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, has not hit in the minors, batting .221 with one home run in 18 games. He has had some struggles in the field as well since his demotion following the end of his rehab assignment.

A polarizing figure among the Yankee fanbase, Volpe was seen by the organization as the next big homegrown star, but his first three big league seasons have mainly disappointed. Volpe flashed power and speed as a rookie in a Gold Glove season, but he has yet to log a year in which he posts an OPS above .666, and he posted a WAR of just 1.6 in 2025, leading some to question if a shoulder injury suffered in May was holding him back.

Volpe will undoubtedly be under heavy scrutiny upon his return, though his debut will not be on Tuesday night. He could be in the lineup for Wednesday's series finale.

The move will likely coincide with Jose Caballero landing on the IL.
