Yankees, Devin Williams have reportedly discussed potential reunion

Devin Williams and the Yankees may not be done with each other after all.

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Yanks and Williams’ camp discussed a potential reunion, and New York has “at least maintained contact” with the free agent reliever as he garners interest from several other teams.

Williams, formerly one of the best closers in the game, had as nightmarish a start imaginable after being traded to the Bronx prior to last season. The righty quickly lost his closer job, blew multiple games that became critical once New York finished the season in a tie with the Blue Jays for first place in the AL East, but lost the tiebreaker due to Toronto holding the head-to-head edge.

Despite Williams’ awful start, he did settle down and become one of the team’s most reliable relievers down the stretch and into the postseason. The 31-year-old finished with a rough 4.79 ERA on the year, but his FIP was a much more respectable 2.64, and over his last 18 appearances, posted a 2.50 ERA with 34 strikeouts and just six walks in 18 innings of work.

Williams and his trademark “airbender” still produced plenty of whiffs, even in a down year, as he finished 2025 with a 34.7 percent strikeout rate. That kind of stuff is enough to generate interest from multiple teams, with Rosenthal noting the Dodgers, Mets, Red Sox, and Reds as other teams that have been connected to Williams so far this offseason.
