Just as the Yankees get bullpen reinforcements, they could be without their top relief arm for the foreseeable future.
According to ESPN insider Jeff Passan, Luke Weaver is expected to be placed on the IL with a hamstring injury that he suffered during Sunday’s series finale against the Dodgers. The Yankee closer is expected to miss 4-6 weeks, per Passan.
Weaver was warming up to pitch the ninth inning on Sunday when he felt something in his hamstring, leading to Tim Hill closing the game instead, a 7-3 win for the Yanks.
The 31-year-old has been stellar so far this season, pitching to a 1.05 ERA in 24 appearances. He took the closer role from the struggling Devin Williams earlier in the season after doing the same in 2024 when Clay Holmes was slumping in the closer spot.
Now, the Yankees may have to put Williams back as their closer, and he has been better of late, but Weaver has been one of the top relief arms in baseball since his breakout last season.
The Yankees recently got back Jonathan Loaisiga and Fernando Cruz, but losing Weaver for extended time will be tough to absorb.
