Max Fried is heading to the injured list, but the news is mainly positive given the alternative.

The Yankees announced Friday afternoon that the lefty ace is being placed on the 15-day IL with bone bruise on his left elbow, a far better diagnosis than the Yankee fans' worst fears, which would have included a torn UCL and season-ending surgery. Instead, per the Yankees, Fried will be shut down until further imaging will take place "in a few weeks," or when Fried is asymptomatic, and Fried would be able to resume throwing once that imaging is done and shows healing.

Dr. Neal ElAttrache will review Fried's imaging as well, and the team will provide a more specific return schedule once the second round of imaging is done.

Fried was pulled from his last start on Wednesday after allowing three runs in three innings, his third straight iffy outing after looking like he was on a Cy Young track to begin the season. The three-time All-Star led the league in innings pitched, and holds a 3.21 ERA.

It seems like Fried will miss extended time, likely several weeks at the least, but it certainly beats surgery that could have cost him the season.
