After signing Anthony Rizzo, the writing is on the wall that Luke Voit’s tenure in pinstripes could be nearing an end, with a trade likely in the first baseman’s future.

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Voit could find a new home across the country in San Diego.

Per Rosenthal, the Padres have shown interest in the 2020 home run leader, despite his recent injury woes. San Diego was unable to land Freddie Freeman in free agency, as the former MVP instead signed with the rival Dodgers, and the Padres could counter with Voit in response.

It’s unclear what the trade market is for Voit, who burst onto the scene in 2018 after the Yankees acquired him in a deal with the Cardinals. Voit was once again putting up All-Star numbers in 2019 before a core injury in London derailed his season, and after leading all of baseball in home runs in 2020, landed on the IL four different times in 2021.

Voit is projected to earn $5.4 million in arbitration in 2022, though he will likely be earning that elsewhere after the addition of Rizzo. With the DH now in the National League as well, the Padres could see Voit as a worthwhile addition with an ability to preserve his health.
