The Yankees have their first baseman – per YES Network’s Jack Curry, the team has agreed to a one-year, $12.5 million deal with seven-time All-Star Paul Goldschmidt, now giving them four former MVPs in the starting lineup.
Goldschmidt, 37, is just two seasons removed from being the NL MVP with St. Louis, but last year he slashed .245/.302/.414 with 22 home runs, 65 RBI, 33 doubles, and 11 stolen bases.
Both he and recently-acquired Cody Bellinger, who will likely now be in the outfield full-time, are above-average defenders at first base, so the Yankees have added some thump as well as leather coming off a season where Yankees first basemen hit .216/.284/.335 with 16 home runs and a collective -1.0 WAR.
With Goldschmidt aboard, the Yankees now have just two remaining big needs on the position player side, one at either second or third base – Jazz Chisholm’s versatility allows either – and one at backup catcher after Jose Trevino was dealt to Cincinnati Friday night.
