The Yankees and Brett Gardner have agreed to a deal pending a physical, according to Ken Davidoff of the New York Post.
Per Jon Heyman, Gardner's deal is one year with a team option for 2022, which comes with a $4 million guarantee and the opportunity to make nearly $11 million total if the option is picked up.
Heyman had been first in reporting earlier Friday that, after not having contact for several weeks, the Yankees and Gardner had rekindled discussion on a reunion for Gardner's 14th season in the Bronx.
Gardner struggled in the 2020 shortened season, posting a .747 OPS, his lowest since 2016. But Gardner was a force in his last full season, hitting a career-high 28 home runs in 2019. But with MLB deadening the baseballs for the 2021 season, and another year tacked onto Gardner’s age, those power numbers will be difficult to approach if he is back in pinstripes.
Aaron Boone said Wednesday that Clint Frazier is expected to be the starting left fielder on Opening Day, but Gardner could provide valuable outfield depth, especially with the injury history of Aaron Judge and Aaron Hicks.
