The Yankees spoiled a chance to take a four-game series against the Orioles after Luis Severino continued to look lost on the mound, while the veteran bats continued to look lost at the plate.
Given the team’s consistent struggles in crucial areas of their roster, Sal and Jerry tried to figure out how exactly the Aaron Judge-less Bombers are still above .500 and in a playoff spot.
“I don’t know how this Yankees team wins series,” Sal said. “I don’t know how they’re over .500. How is that even possible?
“We see them beat the Mariners two out of three. We see them beat the Rangers two out of three…and even take the first two against the Orioles.”
Jerry believed he had the simple answer: the Yankees look promising on some nights and dreadful in others, AKA the DNA of a simply average baseball team.
“They’re not a good team, but they’re not a bad team,” Jerry said. “They’re somewhere in the middle…they’re an average team right now.”
Sal still believes the Yankees will get into the playoffs, but his previous belief that they would be the team to win the American League pennant is starting to wane.
“I still believe that’s possible with this team,” Sal said. “However, things can change quickly…it’s plausible to think - again, I don’t see them missing the postseason - if this team doesn’t wake up here and clean things up, it’s plausible to think this team could maybe miss the postseason.”
