Anthony Volpe shined once again on Wednesday night, going 3-for-5 with a triple in the Yankees’ latest win over the Twins.
The big night at the plate lifted Volpe’s season average to .290, while also holding an .803 OPS, and over his last 25 games, is hitting .339 with two home runs, four stolen bases, and an .897 OPS.
Sal, a firm believer in Volpe’s potential since his rookie campaign last season, is ready to declare the 23-year-old’s ceiling to be the best shortstop in baseball.
“I think one of the most exciting parts of the Yankees is Volpe,” Sal said. “Knowing he is a homegrown guy and watching him play the way that he plays. It’s not just power and strikeouts. He plays baseball in such a beautiful way. That to me is maybe the most appealing thing to me about this Yankee team, even with Judge and Soto being there.
“I think the best shortstop in baseball [is the ceiling]. I felt that way before…I do believe that.”
Volpe already has a Gold Glove to his name, and now the offense has come around, and he will be looking to make an All-Star team that has two other young stud shortstops gunning for entry in Baltimore’s Gunnar Henderson and Kansas City’s Bobby Witt Jr. But Sal says Volpe’s potential is to be as good, or even better, than both of them.
“I think you’re looking at that with Volpe…you’re right with Henderson and Witt. Volpe, he does it differently, but he’s just as good all around,” Sal said.
“Dude, Anthony Volpe is a legitimate superstar in this league, at least on the verge of becoming a superstar in this league.”
