Sal: Yankees can't continue to run out Luis Severino every fifth day

Luis Severino looked slightly better than his previous three starts on Sunday night, but still allowed seven hits and four runs over five innings of work.

The fastball velocity was back around 97 mph, but he still dealt with loads of traffic on the bases, and holds a 9.16 ERA over his last four starts, allowing 29 hits in 18.2 innings.

Sal says it’s time to sound the alarm.

“I would be highly concerned about Luis Severino,” Sal said. “The Yankees are gonna have to go out there and get a starting pitcher, which may not be something you thought they would need to get.

“Even with Rodon coming back…they’re gonna need another starter.”

Health had always been the concern for Severino, who had been a Cy Young candidate when healthy during his career. But now, by all accounts, the righty is healthy but not performing, and with the way the offense is struggling, Sal says the Yankees may face a tough decision soon.

“Severino was a guy they were going to count on at the top of the rotation, and he’s been very, very hittable,” Sal said. “You can’t run him out there every fifth day anymore. The Yankees have to do something with Luis Severino.”
