Hal Steinbrenner appeared on Jack Curry’s Yankees News and Views podcast on Thursday and discussed his openness to talk about a contract extension with Juan Soto during the season, months before the Yankee superstar is set to become a free agent for the first time in his career.
Both BT and Sal agree that, despite Steinbrenner’s comments, Soto is likely going to test the free agent waters this winter.
“I don’t think it happens during the season,” BT said. “I think it happens after the season, but not now or any time soon.
“Any chance you get to show Juan Soto affection and love, like ‘We’re prepared to do m we don’t normally do because you’re special.’ You’re basically just showering him with this Yankee love, that from their perspective, hopefully cements his desire to be a Yankee.”
Sal agrees that it isn’t happening, even if both sides are open to talking, and Boras would be flopping on a major level if he allowed Soto to sign an extension.
“This reeks of Hal saying ‘Yankee fans, I hear you, and we’re going to do whatever we can to keep him here,’” Sal said.
“Scott Boras would be the biggest moron walking the face of this earth if he did not take Soto…to free agency, even if Soto told him he doesn’t want to go anywhere.”
