Sal: Yankees are winning the World Series if they have Gerrit Cole, Luis Gil 1-2 punch
Luis Gil shoved once again for the Yankees on Tuesday night, tossing six shutout innings while allowing just one hit to drop his season ERA to an uber-impressive 1.82.
Meanwhile, on the same night, Gerrit Cole was touching 97 mph on the radar gun and tossing 3.1 shutout innings at Double-A Somerset, his first rehab assignment as he works his way back from an elbow injury.
If Cole returns and Gil continues to pitch the way he has all season, Sal believes the Yanks are World Series bound.
“Remember when I said I would trade Spencer Jones for Corbin Burnes? I wanted to create that 1-2 punch. Well, now they have it,” Sal said. “Cole and Gil are now that 1-2 punch.
“If things stay the way they are now, assuming Cole comes back to be the ace - and I have no reason to believe otherwise - this team is going to win the World Series. I just don’t see a way that they don’t.”
The Yankees would boast two of the best pitchers in baseball atop their rotation, while having two of the best hitters in baseball in their lineup in Juan Soto and Aaron Judge. If they are firing on all cylinders like they are now, with Cole yet to debut, they will be a tough team to beat.
“They have the 1-2 punch. I don’t trust Clay Holmes, but he’s still one of the best closers in the game,” Sal said. “And you have arguably the best top three in baseball with a lineup that is also versatile.”
