The Yankees had a chance to take a crucial four-game set from the Astros on Sunday, but instead, Carlos Rodon faltered once again, the Yankee offense left 15 runners on base, and the team fell to 4.5 games back in the Wild Card standings.
With both Rodon and Luis Severino getting rocked in the Bombers’ two losses of the four-game series, Shaun Morash says the Yanks have no shot of climbing into a playoff spot with two duds currently slotted in the rotation.
“I am done getting roped in and excited for these games, thinking the playoffs even matter at this point,” Morash said. “As good as Cole has been, as encouraging as Cortes was, and Clarke Schmidt is better than what we thought he would be…they now have two automatic losses in the rotation.
“There’s a chronic back issue, and now there’s a hamstring issue? What is [Rodon], the Operation doll?”
Morash had previously circled a pivotal 10-game stretch against the likes of the Orioles, Rays, and Astros as a make-or-break mark of the season. Instead of catapulting themselves back into the race, the Yankees went 4-6, lost more key players along the way, and continued to sport two of the worst starting pitchers in baseball.
“German gone for the year, Rizzo gone for who knows how long, Rodon hurt, still not giving you anything, and Luis Severino admitting he’s the worst player in baseball,” Morash said. “Even if the lineup starts to hit a little bit…the Yankees rotation possesses two of the four worst ERAs of starting pitchers in the American League. If two out of every five games you play, you’re gonna give up 6-7 runs a game…how are you telling me I should have any faith in this team making the playoffs?”
