Tiki & Tierney: Yankees have 'big problem' with DJ LeMahieu

Thursday’s doubleheader highlighted two problems that the Yankees have, as Tiki and Tierney went over during Friday’s show.

Those problems are two veterans with injury history in Luis Severino and DJ LeMahieu, who both don’t look like themselves anymore.

“Severino, his fastball is definitely down…it is not moving, and it is not running,” BT said. “All those home runs he is giving up are in the mid 90s.”

But the bigger concern was for LeMahieu, who is counted on to be a steady bat and on-base presence in the Yankee lineup, but has crashed after a promising start to the season. after going hitless on Thursday, the 34-year-old’s batting average is down to .234 with a .687 OPS.

“He always seems to escape real criticism,” BT said. “He’s surrounded by - allegedly - a bunch of mashers and guys with big contracts and they take away the heat.

“He is a big problem for the Yankees…he looks old. He feels old. I just see a guy every night who is looking slower and slower. He doesn’t bring a lot to the table anymore. He just doesn’t.”

LeMahieu’s 2021 and 2022 seasons both ended prematurely with injuries, and Tiki wonders if the toe issue that sapped him of any power in the second half of last season is once again playing a part in his lack of production at the plate.

“Sometimes when you’re not right with your lower body, it’s harder to stay fit,” Tiki said. “Maybe he just hasn’t been able to do those things, because he doesn’t look like the same player.”
