The Yankees were hanging tough with the Astros in game one, battling in a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning with sights set on stealing the ALCS opener in Houston.
But Clarke Schmidt and Frankie Montas, two pitchers out of the bullpen that were widely questioned when Aaron Boone made the move, served up three solo home runs to turn game one into a 4-1 cushion for the Astros, and setting up Aaron Boone to be ripped by Yankee fans on social media as the events of the later innings were unfolding.
Lou Trivino was warming in the bullpen as Schmidt served up a pair of home runs, then was brought in when the score became 3-1. That led many to question why Trivino wasn't already brought in when the game was still tied, after Schmidt had escaped a tense fifth inning with a double play.
Boone was heavily criticized for his bullpen deployment in game three of the ALDS, when he declined to go to Clay Holmes two games in a row and instead stuck with Schmidt, who gave up a walk-off single to Oscar Gonzalez to put the Yanks on the brink of elimination.
