The Yankees announced their one-year deal with Isiah Kiner-Falefa on Friday, and Yankee fans quickly made it clear that they weren’t too happy about it.
After the shortstop struggled defensively down the stretch to the point where he was benched in favor of Oswaldo Cabrera and Oswald Peraza in the postseason, many hoped that the light-hitting Kiner-Falefa would not be back in pinstripes in 2023, preferring to see Peraza or Anthony Volpe at the position next season.
Of course, signing Kiner-Falefa instead of non-tendering him or heading to arbitration doesn’t mean the above scenarios can’t happen. The Yanks could still trade him, or relegate him to a bench role, which certainly isn’t out of the question on a $6 million salary.
Nonetheless, fans weren’t too excited to see that Kiner-Falefa had signed a deal to return to New York after an underwhelming debut season.
