Aaron Boone on going to Clarke Schmidt: Clay Holmes only available in 'emergency' situation

As Clarke Schmidt finished up an epic ninth inning collapse for the Yankees in game three, the question fans continued to ask was why Clay Holmes wasn’t on in the ninth instead of the inexperienced Schmidt.

Asked after the game, Aaron Boone said Holmes was only available in an “emergency” and didn’t want him pitching on consecutive days as he continues to work his way back from a shoulder injury that kept him out of the end of the regular season.

“He was down there available, but we felt like we would have been putting him in a tough situation,” Boone said.

“Part of him being available this series was just not in a back-to-back situation yet. He just hadn’t thrown any live or anything. While he was pretty good today and I fully expect him to be available tomorrow, it just felt like we needed to stay away there.”

The Yankees will now need the bullpen and Gerrit Cole to hang on through Sunday night’s game to force a decisive game five back in the Bronx on Monday night.
