The Yankees traded for Andrew Benintendi on Wednesday night, and while praising the move, Boomer made sure to throw some shade at Joey Gallo as well.
“Gallo, Callo, the guy can’t hit,” Boomer said. “You’re bringing in a guy that can actually hit the baseball. It won’t be an accident when the ball hits his bat.”
Benintendi is another lefty outfielder, like Gallo, but their hitting approaches are wildly different. Benintendi has just three home runs on the year but rarely strikes out, while Gallo has been dreadful in the strikeout department while walking far less than he did during his time with the Rangers. So the move should present an obvious and immediate upgrade, as the Yanks acquire a 2022 All-Star for a position that has been a black hole in the lineup for the past year.
Safe to say Boomer approves.
“This is a terrific trade,” Boomer said. “It’s a great move by Brian Cashman. He’s gotta get bullpen help now, then get Juan Soto.”
