The Yankees have indeed invited their top 2020 draft pick to camp.
Hours ahead of Aaron Boone’s spring-opening press conference on Wednesday afternoon, the Yankees finally announced their list of non-roster invites to Spring Training, and catcher Austin Wells was among the list of 32 total and 12 in-house invitees.
Wells, who was selected 28th overall last summer, did not play as a rookie because of the cancellation of the minor-league season, but was one of nine total catchers invited to camp.
Among other prospects, outfielder Jasson Dominguez was not invited, nor was top 2019 pick Anthony Volpe, but catchers Anthony Seigler and Josh Breaux – the team’s top two selections in 2018 – were on the list, as was Rule 5 Draft pick RHP Reggie McClain.
On the minor-league signing side, the Yankees’ invite list revealed that in addition to those names already announced and/or rumored, the team has signed infielder Derek Dietrich and RHP Nick Goody, a former Yankees draft pick, to deals with invites to camp.
