Giancarlo Stanton socked a double off the left center field wall to ice Saturday’s win over the Twins, but nearly everyone seemed to think it was leaving the ballpark.
Stanton did his trademark strut out of the batter’s box, Michael Kay broke out his signature home run call from up in the broadcast booth, and the Yankee dugout celebrated like it was a home run, including Anthony Rizzo, who couldn’t figure out how the ball stayed in the park.
Rizzo gave a hysterical reaction to the moonshot actually resulting in a double, and he wasn’t the only one.
“I actually didn’t even know it was in play until after the fact,” Aaron Boone said. “And then I was like, ‘What happened?’ it definitively caught me off guard.”
Stanton certainly came close, as the ball traveled 403 feet and would have been a home run in 26 other ballparks. Nevertheless, the Yankees came away with the win.
