Yankees catchers now hold unfortunate MLB record

Jose Trevino has been the best defensive catcher in baseball, one of the biggest offseason transactions, and has continued to swing a hot bat in August after recording another hit in Friday night’s win over the A’s.

But he also recorded another catcher’s interference, his fourth of the season.

That is tied for the most catcher’s interferences in the league based on team totals, not just players, and that’s only the half of it.

Trevino’s backup, Kyle Higashioka, also has four on the year, bringing the team total to eight, which, per Katie Sharp of Stathead, is the most in any season by any team according to Baseball Reference’s database, which goes back through at least 1950.

It would be maddening for the Yankees to surrender a baserunner in a playoff game due to a catcher’s interference call, so expect the team to be working on improving that unfortunate record by October. But for now, the Yankee catchers are receiving the ball as if Jacoby Ellsbury is at the plate.
