The Yankees announced Wednesday evening that pitcher Domingo German agreed to voluntarily enter inpatient treatment for alcohol abuse, and was placed on the Restricted List.
"It is critical that Domingo completely focuses on addressing his health and well-being," the team said in a statement. "We will respect his privacy as he begins this process."
Aaron Boone and Brian Cashman noted that German has been battling the problem for "years," and an incident occurred this week that led to the righty entering treatment. Cashman told reporters that German would not pitch again for the Yankees in 2023.
It has been a tenure of highs and lows for German in pinstripes. He was suspended after an incident at a teammate's charity event in which he allegedly struck his then girlfriend, and the incident reportedly escalated when the two returned to their home later that evening. He returned without issues, pitched the fourth perfect game in franchise history earlier this season, then struggled mightily on the mound ever since.
Cashman and Boone said Wednesday's news was in no way related to German being a late scratch from his last scheduled start in what the team described as pain in German's armpit, only for German to come on in relief that night and toss five scoreless innings.
