Tiki Barber says Wednesday’s win over the A’s, highlighted by Domingo German’s perfect game, shows that the Yankees are still in as good a position as any American League team to make a run to the Fall Classic.
Sure, things have been ugly at times since Aaron Judge landed on the IL, but with reinforcements coming down the road, and the Bombers staying afloat in the meantime, why not the Yankees come October?
“It feels like they’re grossly underperforming, but the reality is, they’re eight games above .500,” Tiki said. “When you look at the bigger picture, the new York Yankees have the eighth best record in all of baseball.
“I think Domingo German’s perfect game exactly captures the essence of this Yankees team. at times, they can be great, and others, they can be terrible. But in reality, they have as good a chance of anybody in the American League to be the representative in the World Series.”
The Yankees are 9.5 games behind the first-place Rays in the AL East, and are just one game from falling out of a playoff spot in the Wild Card picture. Still, with some star talent on the mend, Tiki believes it may only be greener grass from here on out, and German’s historic night was a reminder of what the Yankees can be.
“They’re eight games above .500, they don’t have their best player, their starting pitching has been erratic…but that can change,” Tiki said. “Carlos Rodon is pitching, Nestor Cortes, at some point, is going to come back, Clarke Schmidt…over the last six starts, has been really damn good.
“The Yankees have as good a chance as anybody in the American League, of getting to the World Series, especially if they start to get right. It’s not even July yet, and they’re not fully healthy.”
