One week ago, the Yankees were waking up before taking what would be the second straight game against the Red Sox in Fenway, rolling towards the All-Star break as the best team in baseball.
Since then, the Bombers have lost three straight to Boston, lost a series to the lowly Reds, and have dropped five of their last six games following Friday’s crushing 11-inning defeat in the Bronx.
“It’s a tough one,” Jose Trevino said. “It’s a tough one to swallow. We’ll come back [Saturday] and get after it again.”
Trevino had the bat in his hands when a Yankee win seemed almost a certainty, having just tied the game and loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the ninth. But Trevino bounced into a 5-2-3 double play before DJ LeMahieu bounced back to the mound to bail out Tanner Houck and send the game to extra innings.
“I wish I had come through in that situation,” Trevino said. “I wish I could come through in every situation. Just come back tomorrow and try to be better.”
The Yanks loaded the bases again in the 10th with one out and couldn’t come through, then were one pitch away from getting through a scoreless 11th before Michael King bounced a 1-2 slider that trickled away from Trevino, causing a heads-up Xander Bogaerts to dash home and slide in with what would be the go-ahead run.
“I could have kept it closer,” Trevino said. “He made a great read on it, but I think I could have kept it closer.”
The Yankees, so dominant nearly all season, have dropped two extra-inning losses in their last three games, and are stumbling towards the All-Star break. But Trevino believes it could help the Bombers in the long run.
“A little adversity never hurts anybody,” Trevino said. “I think we’ll be fine.”
