Matt Carpenter set the tone for the Yankee offense on Wednesday afternoon, working an 11-pitch at-bat against Shohei Ohtani before curling a leadoff home run around the right field foul pole to give the Yanks a 1-0 first inning lead.
For Carpenter, signed by the Yanks last week, it was his third home run since arriving, and his third hit overall. He is just the third Yankee in franchise history to log home runs as his first three hits with the team, joining new teammate Kyle Higashioka and Alfonso Soriano, who homered in 1999 for his first career hit, then went deep twice in his first two hits of the 2000 season.
Carpenter told reporters after Tuesday night’s win over the Angels that he hoped to make a habit of feasting on the short porch at Yankee Stadium after going deep, and he wasted little time taking advantage again, though his long ball on Wednesday was much more of a no-doubter, at least in terms of distance.
