The New York Yankees have recalled RHPs Luis Gil, Brody Koerner, and Stephen Ridings from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and the latter two will be in the bullpen tonight behind Gil, who will make his major-league debut as Tuesday’s starter in place of Gerrit Cole
Ridings, who is not on the 40-man roster, and Gil were added as replacement players for ole and Jordan Montgomery, who were placed on the COVID-19 IL, while Koerner was signed to an MLB contract as a roster swap for Gio Urshela, who was on the 10-day injured list retroactive to Sunday with a left hamstring strain.
In addition, the team also claimed outfielder Jonathan Davis off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays, and announced that RHP Sal Romano, who was designated for assignment on Sunday, was claimed off waivers by the Milwaukee Brewers.
Because Gil was on the 40-man roster, and because they have three players on the COVID IL (Wandy Peralta is also still on it), the Yankees did not need to make any moves to accommodate Koerner, Ridings, or Davis.
Gil, the Yankees’ No. 6 prospect, has split this season between Double-A Somerset and Triple-A, posting a 2.64 ERA in 30 2/3 innings with Somerset and a 5.64 ERA in 30 1/3 innings with SWB, with 88 total strikeouts in 61 innings.
Koerner, 25, was a 17th-round pick in 2015. He had spent the entire season so far at Triple-A, going 3-3 with a 2.95 ERA in 61 innings over 16 games (13 starts).
Ridings, who was born on Long Island, signed a minor-league deal over the winter after spending 2020 with the Royals organization. The 25-year-old has split the season between Double-A and Triple-A, posting an 5-0 record and 1.24 ERA in 22 relief appearances, with 42 strikeouts in 29 innings.
All three pitchers will be making their MLB debuts if and when they appear.
Davis, 29, was DFA by the Blue Jays on Friday after the trade deadline. He had split the year between the Jays and their Triple-A affiliate, and hit .143 in 52 MLB games. He is a career .180 hitter in 122 games over parts of four seasons with Toronto, and can be sent to Triple-A this season as he is in his final season with a minor-league option.
Romano was DFA on Sunday when the Yankees officially activated Andrew Heaney. He had made two appearances, pitching 2 1/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
