Yankees place Trey Amburgey on IL, call up Estevan Florial

Yankee outfielders continue to drop like flies, as Trey Amburgey is headed to the 10-day IL with a right hamstring strain.

Amburgey, who was just called up on Friday, played in just two games before being pulled from Sunday’s win over the Red Sox with what was initially called hamstring cramping, but has now been classified as a low-grade strain. He went hitless in four at-bats in his first taste of the majors.

The injury to Amburgey is the latest in a long line of outfield losses for the Yanks. Just a day before Amburgey left with his hamstring injury, newly acquired Tim Locastro was taken out early after he made a jumping catch in foul ground and banged his knee on the wall, tearing his ACL in the process. Clint Frazier and Miguel Andujar are both still on the IL, while Aaron Judge is on the COVID IL and Aaron Hicks’ season was lost back in May.

The Yankees were forced to field an outfield of Brett Gardner, Greg Allen and Ryan LaMarre after Amburgey’s injury on Sunday, with LaMarre escaping an injury scare of his own, staying in the game and going 2-for-3 with a home run.

Estevan Florial was called up to replace Amburgey. The 23-year-old is batting just .222 in Triple-A and went 1-for-3 with a double in his only MLB game this season, a 5-3 win against Toronto.
